not so fast. remember 'origami'. "who?" "what??" yeh, exactly. msoft's tablet PC that generated a lot of buzz before it's launch. and when it launched, it promptly flopped, hence the hollow response when it's name is shouted. i agree that an xbox branded device will have to compete with both psp and ipod, and even nintendo's ds; and hence i don't think apple's in any real danger. nevertheless, it is 'bout that time they release another major ipod revision.

Remember, though - Origami was another one of those projects where Microsoft do the software side and leave a number of third parties to do the hardware.

With this new device, Microsoft will do the whole shebang in the same way as they do the Xbox - so there's certainly danger here; look how the Xbox impacted the console market!

Apple are not resting on their laurels, though - I'm sure we'll see some pretty impressive updates to iPod because of this new competition. :D

But I can't decide weather to go for the slower 200 GB drive, or the somewhat faster 160GB drive.

I know that you can never have too much disk space, but I'm wondering what the performance differential will be.

I'm currently running on a 7200 rpm 100 GB (with only 10 GB free), and either of the options in the new machines will be slower (but cooler and less battery hungry)... am I going to be unhappy with a 4200 rpm 200 GB drive? Does anyone know the cache size or any other specs for the 200 GB drive?

Stay with Verizon and get yourself an Itouch ipod!

I'm thinking of switching from Verizon to AT&T to get the iPhone. However, I'm hearing horror stories of up to 30% dropped calls in the NY area.

For all iPhone/AT&T users in northern NJ and NYC area, can you verify that you experience around 30% of dropped calls?? is this true??

I want the iPhone, but not if it comes with such bad service!!

    Thank you,

I'm all set for Gran Turismo 5 now :D

Don't worry, your vision is fine. One of the wheels is for a friend at university.

How are these? I'm looking for a wheel for F1 2010 and GT5 (when they both come out).
I was about to purchase the G25 but these may do as well.
    Does it have paddles?

I never watched those shows, so thanks for the information.

I guess that does show it can be done without the world coming to an end.

And now, back on the Charlie front, for those who are simply tired of it all...the Charlie Sheen blocker for Chrome and Firefox ( :DI still say Ted McGinley ( has been called "the patron saint of shark-jumping" by founder Jon Hein. This is a reference to the popular and enduring shows which have featured him in their declining years. Such shows include Happy Days, The Love Boat and Dynasty.[6] Hein writes that this is not a comment "on Ted's fine acting skills" and that "he has a great sense of humor about it, too".[7] In one episode of Married... with Children (a show that stayed on the air for six seasons after McGinley's addition to the cast) McGinley himself spoofed this fact by momentarily breaking the fourth wall by asking Al "Another picture, captain? I mean, Fonzie? ....Al?". A 2003 issue of People that focused on McGinley's casting on Hope and Faith was titled "Ted McGinley Is Not a Killer", referencing his reputation for causing shows to jump the shark, though his long involvement with Married... with Children suggests otherwise; his contributions may have enabled the series to have a longer and more successful run.

It's interesting how many people blast Apple. They completely retooled the smart phone/mobile phone platform.

I really enjoy Apple products, and have since 1996. They always just work, sure the hardware at times can get dated between updates; but things still just work. Is Apple greedy? No they are like any company, they want to make a profit.

But it is not Apple's fault that so many companies are playing catch-up. Those companies that are playing catch-up are the truly greedy ones. They thought they could continue to pass off mediocre products and consumers would continue to purchase them. They spent no money on design, r and d, and many other aspects that make a product great. So they let Apple simply slide into the market and grab up market share.'s no conspiracy, these companies just didn't keep their eye on the ball.

Maybe some of the folks on here should be happy that Apple has become mainstream. Apple gave geeks everywhere the ability to have something in common to talk about with that hot chick at the coffee shop using an iPhone or Macbook. Sorry just trying to throw a positive in there.

Have you used a 4.3" phone. They don't seem that much physically bigger but the screen size is awesome! Apple keeps getting squeezed with adding new technology because of the size limitations of the phone. Giving us a slightly bigger size with the advantage of a bigger screen size AND more components seems like an excellent tradeoff.

Yeah - I know if will never happen because SJ is compulsive obsessive with never making things bigger.

The current size is more than adequate for me, and I use reading glasses! The screen could possibly be increased I suppose if the black areas were somehow shrunk, but unless your hands are like shovels the phones already big enough.

It looks like Samsung is supplying the SSD in the MBA.

Apple shipping newer, faster SSDs in latest MacBook Airs
by Chris Foresman | Last updated 3 days ago

Apple launched revised MacBook Air models in the fall of 2010 by going SSD-only with speedy, but custom, small outline SSD modules made by Toshiba. However, some users are now reporting that the most recent MacBook Airs are using what appears to be a Samsung-made module, which is capable of 20-25 percent faster read and write speeds.
According to testing by AnandTech, an SSD that carries the model name SM128C turned in a read speed of 261.1 MBps and a write speed of 209.6 MBps. Those speeds are 24 percent and 19 percent faster, respectively, compared to the Toshiba-made SSDs (model TS128C) that originally shipped in the MacBook Air.
While the manufacturer hasn't been confirmed yetApple has not responded to our request for commentAnandTech believes the "SM" in the model name refers to Samsung. The site noted that the tested speed ratings are comparable to other SSD drives built by Samsung.
We felt that the 11" MacBook Air was very responsive with its equipped SSD module in our review last fall, but a little extra performance never hurts. For now, though, there is no way to guarantee which SSD module you'll get when buying a MacBook Air, and neither Samsung nor Toshiba appear to be offering their modules to consumers. Well-known Mac upgrade source Other World Computing offers the only known replacement SSD modules for the MacBook Air, which are rated at similar performance levels as the purported Samsung modules. Our full review of that upgrade option is coming soon.

Can you point me to were you are getting your 2TB hard drives for free?

I am pretty sure you won't be storing 2TB of your music with Apple for $20/yr.

Is it even known yet exactly how this will work? The fact that Apple needed to make agreements with all of the labels makes this service look a little suspect to me. For example, would I be allowed to store my music that was ripped from a CD under a different label (one which Apple doesn't have an agreement?)

So if the white iPhone 4 comes out in April/May, could we take it as an indicate that iPhone 5 won't be out in June?

Why would they release the white phone and then release iPhone 5 in a month after that?

On the other hand, iPhone 4 and 3GS co-exist, so what would be the problem if there was a cheaper black/white iPhone 4 and black/white iPhone 5 at the same time?

If it's connections to your laptop, that's a win right there. Once you've set up the other connected devices, you won't have to mess with them whenever you go somewhere with the laptop.
The only connection I want going to my laptop is power. Everything else needs to be wireless. That is winning, duh. ;)

That's typical Apple. Intel chipset does not support USB 3.0? No USB 3.0 for Apple fans! NVIDIA GPUs do not work with SandyBridge? Stick with outdated C2D CPUs for years. What's more important - CPU/chip or case? In case of Apple, the case always wins. Apple is all about image. Once designed, the case should stay unchanged for many years. Apple will wait until somebody designs a "suitable" chip. Is not it kind of backward? Then we hear excuses from Apple fans why Apple could not use separate USB 3.0 controller. This would require redesign of the motherboard - Wow! Think of it - redesigning a motherboard! Some companies redesign tens of motherboards every year but Apple? No way. Now iPhone users will be stuck with outdated technology for a year or two and they will be feeding us all kinds of excuses why LTE can not be used in iPhone. Just ridiculous.

Okay, now I might end up being branded as an Apple apologist for this, but this thread is bugging me.

Really, people, lighten up! It's like the corner of the carpet is smoking a little bit and people start shouting about how the whole house is about to burn down.

Now, certainly, these issues should be looked at with all due diligence. But do you honestly think that Apple isn't? Do you honestly think that Apple has simple ignored security all this time? Certainly not. The fact that OS X is as secure as it is clearly shows that Apple has done a good job so far. Now, maybe we've crossed an invisible barrier on the scale of the visibility of the platform, and now a lot more people are trying to target OS X, so more vulnerabilities are being found. But, there really is a big difference between a vulnerability and an exploit in the wild. iAdware is the closest thing to a true exploit I've heard of to date, and we don't even know what kind of vector it uses to get itself installed.

So, really, lay off the heavy handed "Apple has to start paying attention to security" nonsense. The implication that Apple hasn't been paying attention to security is just irritating, to say the least.

    Good points,

I agree with some of your points. Apple has done a good job historically, and currently with regards to security. I am not worried that my system is going to be taken over, or hacked the moment I go onto the internet, or sign into a public WIFI.

I do not agree that lower our demands for Apple with regards to security expectations. Now is Apple's chance to prevent getting an image that their competition has, with regards to holes in security. Apple themselves have advertised that Spyware, viruses, etc, are not part of the OS X experience ( In my opinion, that may be received as a challenge, or incentive for someone to make that argument a fallacy.

It wouldn't be too difficult for Apple to provide something like Rosetta for iDevice apps.

You don't need Rosetta, iOS is Intel 64 native. You get a copy with Xcode called the Simulator.
